Bulb Shovel

This is a traditional bulb shovel straight from The Netherlands, world tulip-growing capital. It is narrow and straight, somewhat like a trowel; it's clever because, when you use it, you are digging out the smallest amount of soil needed to get the bulbs in the ground.

Ideal for creating a scattered, naturalistic planting in amongst other plants, it is best used to plant single large bulbs or a few small bulbs in one hole.

The handle length is similar to the Great Dixter short planting spade (an excellent tool that we also use a lot during bulb planting season), and is designed to be used from a kneeling or squatting position so that you don't have to go up and down constantly, as you would with a normal-sized spade. Once you're down on the ground, digging is faster and more efficient, and the short handle allows you to more easily put your body into digging.

If you've planted bulbs en masse, day after long day, you know that many tools quickly take a toll on your wrists (and knees) especially when working on heavy, compacted or rooty soils. This specialized tool from Sneeboer allows you to bulb plant without the wrist fatigue you would get from using a hori hori or a trowel. What a great idea!
