This is a tool that I've never owned before but that I always wished I had with me when looking at new job sites.
This soil sample drill with sharp stainless steel edges and pointed tip is used to take core samples and is much easier than digging a big hole to get a deep soil profile. The thick rubber grips on the wide handles make turning drill easy.
The soil sample drill set comes into two pieces, the actual soil sample drill and the 'thumb', a stainless-steel protective piece that is used for removing the soil core from the shaft.
Push the drill with two hands firmly into the soil, twist back and forth as needed to reach desired depth. To remove the tool from the ground without losing the sample, turn the drill a quarter turn and pull up. The sample will stay in the drill shaft can be examined in the shaft.
To remove the sample from the shaft: place the stainless steel thumb guard over your own thumb before removing the core sample from the drill shaft, and then push the core out of the shaft with the thumb guard. This will prevent cuts from the sharp edges of the coring shaft.
Warning: Always use the stainless steel thumb guard to remove the core sample from the drill shaft. Both sides of the drill shaft are sharp and there may be steel burs along the edges.
