The Onion Hoe (aka halfmoon hoe) is a versatile weeding tool that is used by pulling the sharp edge across the soil to cut off annual weeds. Or turn it on its edge and use the pointed tips to chop and dig.
It's commonly used in vegetable gardens, especially in raised beds, but is also a precision weeding tool that can be used in beds. Troy Scott Smith, head gardener at Sissinghurst Castle Gardens, says that an onion hoe is his favourite weeding tool for garden beds, and that's recommendation enough for me!
In addition to being a great hand weeding tool, it can also be used for shaping soil, harvesting root crops, hilling around plants, creating narrow furrows for planting seeds or bulbs, and digging shallow trenches.
The shape of the "swan neck" makes the tool more ergonomic to use.
