I frequently find myself giving advice about tool care and maintenance these days, so I thought this tool maintenance kit would be a smart add-on for customers wanting to keep their garden tools in excellent condition year-on-year.

The kit consists of all the essential items for cleaning and protecting your tools: a wire brush, a sharpening file, boiled linseed oil and a cloth. All presented in a beautiful wooden box.

First, clean the handle and the steel head with the wire brush. Next, sharpen the edges of bladed tools. Finally, apply boiled linseed oil to the wood handle and stainless steel head to condition and protect wooden handles from the elements, and to protect steel blades from rust.

To keep your tools in top condition, Sneeboer recommends treating wooden-handled tools twice a year. One of those times should be at the end of the season before you put them away for the winter. All brand new Sneeboer wooden handles should be oiled before you use them the first time.

Warning:  incorrect storage of boiled linseed oil and rags/cloths used for application can lead to spontaneous combustion. Please don't forget about it/them and leave it/them in an unsuitable environment.

PLEASE READ MORE ABOUT SAFE  HANDLING & STORAGE BELOW

We also offer the kit items for purchase separately:  Boiled Linseed Oil, Tool Sharpener, and Brass Wire Brush.

The Sneeboer family has been making garden tools for over 100 years. Sneeboer tools are beautifully designed and built for maximum strength and utility - the heads are hand-forged from one piece of stainless steel and they are fitted with ash handles from FSC-certified forests.

How to Apply Boiled Linseed Oil
  • it is best applied with a rag or buffing cloth
  • gloves should be worn at all times during the handling and application process
  • first, clean your tools thoroughly with a Sneeboer brass wire brush to remove dirt and gunk
  • rub it into the wood straight up and down the grain
  • thin coatings work best, as thicker application coatings can take longer to dry and get sticky or gummy
  • it may take between 24-72 hours for boiled linseed oil to fully cure, or feel dry out to the touch

About Boiled Linseed Oil

  • boiled linseed oil has not actually been boiled, but is chemically modified with metallic solvents for faster drying times
  • it is different from standard or raw linseed oil which can take weeks to dry, sometimes longer
  • it is not a surface treatment, but soaks deeply into the wood fibres and can transform old, worn out and dried wood to its former glory
  • it helps preserve metal by protecting the surface from oxidation
  • thin coatings work best, as thicker application coatings can take longer to dry and get sticky or gummy

Safe Handling Tips

  • store in cool a cool, dry location out of direct sunlight
  • after applying, lay rags/cloths flat on a non-flammable surface (concrete is best), away from potential heat/flame sources, until dry.
  • the oil and completely dry rags/cloths can be stored in a metal container
  • never scrunch up and discard wet rags/cloths used to apply the oil as this can be a huge fire risk if they heat up; in which case they can be a lot more heat reactive and combustible due to lack of air ventilation to cool the oil down

Caring for your Sneeboer Tools

The most common damage we see are broken wooden handles. Generally we see this when the tools have been used to pry or leverage on plants that are too big. The steel heads are so strong that when enough force is applied to the handle, the wooden handle snaps.

Correct Use of your Sneeboer Tools:

  • Ensure you are using the correct tools for the job and size of the plant. Lots of plants have large root bases that smaller tools cannot cope with.
  • Do not pry or leverage, these are not crowbars.
  • Do not leave tools out in the elements and be sure to use linseed oil to protect and waterproof the handles.
  • Sneeboer tools are built to last but their warranty does not cover wear through heavy or misuse.

Broken handles can happen, replacement handles are available. Send us an email with some photos and brief description of what work you were doing when the snap happened: Contact Us

Digging Tips:

Remember, your spade or shovel is not a pry bar. Handles (wood or metal) can snap when too much force is applied.
For big digging jobs, check out the King of Spades collection, which are some of the toughest spades on the market. These shovels and spades can handle a whole lot of prying action and are THE tool to pry, dig, lift & transplant large plant material.

Cleaning & Sharpening your Sneeboer Tools

The Sneeboer family has been producing tools for over 100 years. Sneeboer tools are beautifully designed and built for maximum strength and utility - the heads are hand-forged from one piece of stainless-steel, and they are fitted with ash handles from FSC-certified forests.

Cleaning & Sharpening your Sneeboer Tools:

  1. Before their first use, treat everything with linseed oil. This way handles will remain their looks, won’t dry out and dirt will not stick to the wood. Even the stainless steel parts can be treated with linseed oil. That way dirt will also not stick to the blade of a spade, rake or hand tool.
  2. Wipe/wash off soil and mud, and dry your tools at the end of each workday.
  3. Remove rust from stainless steel tools with the abrasive cleaning block. Do this before it spreads or pits your tools, rust is corrosive and can ruin tools if left.
  4. Use a brass-comb wire brush to clean wooden handles and stainless steel tool heads.
  5. Do a detailed cleaning and sharpening periodically if you use your tools frequently. Definitely at the end of the gardening year before you put your tools away. Use the Sneeboer tool sharpener which was designed specifically for Sneeboer's stainless steel. Do not use an electric sander as this can heat up the metal and will change their quality.
  6. Re-apply linseed oil to wooden handles and stainless steel to protect them from the elements and rust. Be sure to handle the oil-soaked rag with care, and store it in an air-tight container away from heat.
