Tobisho SR-1s are a lightweight and extremely well-balanced pair of secateurs, based on the traditional Japanese A-Type shape but constructed more simply from one piece of high quality Yasugi steel, blade to handle. The face of the cutting blade is slightly hollow-ground to reduce friction in the cutting action, which makes for a finer, smoother cut. And they are super sharp!
Pruning with a sharp tool that fits your hand well and is a comfortable weight will lessen repetitive strain for gardeners who use their secateurs frequently and/or for long periods of time. The SR-1 is an excellent choice for small to medium sized hands.
The locking mechanism (the clasp at the bottom of the handles) is very deliberate and easy to use, even with gloves on. The lock never accidentally engages. And the red and yellow handles are easy to find if you put them down in the garden. But don't! You'll want to keep these beauties safe and sound in your holster.
Tobisho recommends sharpening with the Niwaki sharpening stones. The high quality steel sharpens easily and holds an edge much longer than lower quality steel, but it is brittle and can be damaged through misuse. They are not meant to be used for heavy hacking, cutting wire or opening paint cans! Handle them with care, and clean and sharpen regularly and they should last you a lifetime!
