Here's another tool I spied on BBC Gardener's World - this one is often used by co-host Adam Frost. Its somewhat like a cross between Monty Don's Old Dutch Trowel and the Great Dixter Short Spade:  the same grip as the Dixter tool, with a shorter handle and a flat head; same length handle as Monty's tool and a flat head.

Ideal used from a kneeling or squatting position (so no more up and down), you can use it one-handed to dig a hole with a stabbing motion or use two hands for more digging power and less strain on your wrists.

The sharp sides and pointed end allow you to easily cut through the soil, or perennial roots when dividing plants. Particularly useful in the veggie garden, for planting up containers, or planting bulbs and small plants.
