If you get excited by quality, you'll love these: Tobisho are a small family business deep in the mountains of Yamagata, an area famous for the quality of its steel. All their tools are drop forged (bashed with a very heavy pneumatic hammer) out of amazing quality steel, they have an incredible weight and balance, and great attention to detail. The Japanese name, hakaribasami, translates as leaf cutting scissors, and it's crucial not to cut old, hard growth, just soft green stuff.
A cross between giant secateurs and mini hedging shears, these topiary trimmers are used single-handedly, leaving your other hand free. The long blades and spring action make clipping a breeze, excellent for finessing your topiary and used for precision cutting of awkward angles in tight spaces.
The locking mechanism (the clasp at the bottom of the handles) is very deliberate and easy to use, even with gloves on. The lock never accidentally engages. The red and yellow handles are easy to find if you put them down in the garden. But don't! You'll want to keep these safe and sound in your holster.
The steel sharpens easily but is brittle and can be damaged through misuse; they are not meant for heavy hacking or opening paint cans.
Tobisho recommends sharpening with the Niwaki sharpening stones. Tobisho tools all come with a spare spring.
