100% Worm Castings

Worm castings are best described as a biological care package, bringing a lot of organisms to the soil. These organisms hold plant nutrients inside the structures of their bodies. As they excrete or die, nutrients are delivered to the surrounding soil particles, and hungry plants' roots will take them in. When higher level decomposers make meals out of other organisms, nature has set things up so that up there is plenty of nitrogen rich waste product that plants use.

Produced locally in the Cowichan Valley, BC from cow manure.

Instructions for Use

Best used by mixing 10-15% worm castings into the soil when potting/repotting container plants (approx. 150-300g per 4L/1gal. pot). Alternately, spread 1-3 cm on the soil surface.

You can also make your own worm tea that can be watered into the soil of your container plants.

To make worm tea:

Soak worm castings in water overnight, strain the liquid, and then use it to nourish your plants.

What you'll need:

  • Worm castings (vermicompost)
  • A bucket or container 20 L/4.5 Gal
  • A porous bag (like an old stocking, cheesecloth, or a mesh bag)
  • Water (rainwater is best, but tap water that has been allowed to sit overnight to release chlorine is also fine)

Instructions:

  • Prepare the "tea bag": Place a generous amount of worm castings (around 2-3 cups or 5 litres for a 20L bucket) into the porous bag and tie it securely.
  • Add 1 cup of molasses
  • Soak the castings: Submerge the "tea bag" in a bucket of water.
  • Steep overnight: Allow the water to steep for at least 12 hours, or ideally overnight.
  • Strain the tea: Carefully remove the "tea bag" and discard the castings.
  • Use the worm tea: You can use the worm tea as a soil drench or foliar spray, diluting it with water as needed (a 1:2 tea to water ratio is a good starting point).
  • Storage: Worm tea is best used fresh, but if you need to store it, do so in a cool, dark place and use it within 24-48 hours.
