Hessian Leaf Sacks

These open mesh hessian sacks are great for collecting leaves or storing produce. Fully  biodegradable and hydrocarbon free (important for food storage).

I especially like them for collecting leaves to make leaf mould, a wonderfully nutritious soil conditioner, instead of using plastic garbage bags. They can also be used to collect dry leaves for use in the compost bin - alternating layers of dry leaves (brown materials) with kitchen waste (green materials) is a great way to keep your composter cooking and produce beautiful compost.

To make leaf mould:  Fill the hessian sack with slightly damp leaves from your garden and simply leave them in a shady corner until the following year. The leaves will break down over time (the ones on the outside may not look like they're doing much, but reach inside the pile and you will see that everything else has broken down into a soft and crumbly, dark brown material.

Leaf mould is slightly acidic so it is an ideal mulch for beds and borders. Also an excellent ingredient to use in homemade potting mixes.
