Tobisho pruning tools are the creme de la creme in the Japanese gardening world. They are made in a small family-run factory in Yamagata; production is limited and, because they are exceptionally well-made and such a pleasure to use, they are very difficult to get hold of! We have been able to get a small shipment of these Pro Snips, as well as the Tobisho SR-1 secateurs.

They are a lightweight and extremely well-balanced pair of snips, with the same exceptional craftsmanship of the secateurs, and the same excellent locking mechanism (the clasp at the bottom of the handles).

The long skinny blades allow you to get into tight spaces and make precise cuts without leaving stubs. Great for deadheading, cut flowers, harvesting veggies, and cutting lengths of twine for staking. In Japan, they are used for needling pines.

The lock is very deliberate and easy to use, even with gloves on and with one hand (push the lock against your hip to lock one-handed)! This one-handed feature is what makes these snips worth the investment for me. I find the locking/closing setup on many snips a little awkward when you're taking them in and out of your holster/pocket throughout the day; generally you can't close them with one hand, and you want to because your other hand is usually busy. You want to keep them closed when not in use so you don't poke yourself with the very pointy and sharp tips.

The softer steel sharpens easily but means that they are not suitable for heavy hacking, and definitely not for opening paint cans! They are not secateurs, they are only meant for very light snipping work.

The red and yellow handles are easy to find if you put them down in the garden. But don't! You'll want to keep these safe and sound in your holster.

Tobisho recommends sharpening with the Niwaki sharpening stones.  Tobisho snips and secateurs come with a spare spring.
